The wild flower displays in Spring turns the veld into a floral carpet. In this area we have the largest selection of birds in South Africa (approx 380 species). Bird hides, for your convenience, can be found along the Berg River.
Angling is a great sport along the Dwarskersbos coastline and the fishing villages of Velddrif and Laaiplek (originally known as Rooibaai). Permits are required and are available at our local Post Office on the main road. |
Situated at the mouth of the Berg River, Laaiplek and Velddrif are home to a colourful fishing community, proud of their heritage which they bravely fight to keep going. These villages are steeped in history and are also famous for their true West Coast hospitality and cuisine. There are several great restaurants where you will receive the best in fresh fish on a daily basis.
So spend some time, meander along the “Bokkom" Lane, surround yourself with the ambience that is our West Coast Riviera. |
Only when you have met a strandloper, sipped some soetes, tasted the Bokkoms, savoured our cuisine, and danced the ‘langarm’ in your Kramer Veldskoene, will you be able to say, ‘been to Velddrif, done it, seen it, and got my vellies’ and understand the true experience of the West Coast. |
